Olie back at Lyyden on 675 after Pembrey High side
18 June 2007 |
After his disastrous high side at the third round of the Triumph 675 Young Guns championship at Pembrey, Olie was fired us for the fourth round at Lydden Hill. The Pembrey tumble had cost him the championship lead, now lying in third place, with a further 75 points max up for grabs, he knew there was work to do. The weather forecast on Thursday night was not good-it looked like most of the country would be drowned over the weekend while residents of Dover basked in the sun…. The truck was packed on Thursday night and Sharpy and Olie got away early Friday afternoon to try and beat the traffic.
Saturday morning was a bit of a rush. There was still a sticker set to put on the bike as well as a new tank to return the 675 to its former glory after its excursion at Pembrey, which was to be collected at the circuit.
First Qualifying went quickly. Olie found that the bike felt fine and used the session to scrub in tyres and the new brake disks, the originals being trashed in the last round! Olie upped his pace in second qualifying after making a few changes, but was frustrated that he couldn’t get to within two tenths of what he did in March on T3’s press bike; however he still ended up second on the grid with a 43.7sec lap. He was fairly confident for the race but knew that a good start was essential as the grid was so tight time wise. Getting off the line okay he found himself "mugged" on the first lap and ended up 7th into the first corner, and despite his best efforts he finished 6th overall at race end, and 5th young gun Olie was not a happy bunny…
Steve arrived in the afternoon and helped to set the bike up for Sunday morning. Three laps of warm up practice was all that was available, with many incidents using up the time set-aside for practice. Two of these were spent scrubbing tyres in. However the bike felt okay and Olie was optimistic for the race. Due to the Superpole result he started from 5th on the grid, getting a fair start and settling into fourth place. Then the red flags came out due to a horrific accident involving a rider and a marshal. The race was declared a result, so Olie had to settle for 4th overall and third young gun. The last race of the day was cancelled, as there was not enough time left after so many incidents. This was the worst week-end Olie had seen for crashes, and hopefully will be the exception- we are pleased that both rider and Marshall involved in the last lap incident are doing okay, albeit with some broken bones. For Olie and team Flitwick, the weekend as a whole didn’t turn out to be as bad as it could have been, despite the disappointing results. Olie managed to claw some points back on Michael Booth, who had one DNF, and just needs to keep putting in the results. Next up is Brands Hatch CRMC King of Brands meeting, aboard Giovannis Paton, on 7th/8th July. Hope to see some of you there!
